Reduced Paper Handling Provides Dramatic Increase in Productivity and Lowers TCO

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., February 1, 2004 -- Tangent Systems Inc., an established provider of high-speed document and transaction processing software, is now offering a release of its flagship DocuTran® II software that provides ARC check truncation during the first presentation of the check to the sorter.

"This is a really big win for organizations that struggle to make day-of-receipt deposits of all funds," said Bruce Rennecker, vice president of Marketing for Tangent. "The amount of time needed to encode checks dropped 80% in our first test case. Our customer, who was constantly struggling to make same-day deposits, is now routinely finishing their work early."

Tangent's 1-pass ARC solution is installed at a Fortune 500 company that processes in excess of 30 million payments per month. The customer, who has been using Tangent's 2-pass solution for several months, realized from the outset that the 1-pass solution was the ultimate goal. "Even before getting the 2-pass solution past their pilot phase, our customer asked us to begin working on a 1-pass solution," said Rennecker. "DocuTran is such a flexible product that I knew we'd be able to do this. And the development team didn't disappoint me. They provided a brilliant solution that is pretty much a drop-in for every customer that can make a business case for ARC." Rennecker also notes that organizations that process a high percentage of personal checks will find that the hardware requirements drop significantly providing significant savings in capital expense, maintenance and energy as well as reducing the physical space required for the processing center. All this translates directly to a reduced Total Cost of Ownership.

How It Works

The 1-pass ARC solution has all the flexibility of the celebrated DocuTran 2-pass solution. Account and transaction rules are developed by the organization to determine which specific accounts are either eligible or ineligible as well as specific transaction eligibility rules (for example, the organization may decide that no multi check transaction should be truncated.)

In the 1-pass solution single doc/single check transactions are evaluated for eligibility at full sorter track speed even on the fastest transports. The checks, and optionally the stubs, for ARC-eligible transactions are sorted to separate pockets. This allows running only those checks that must be deposited as paper in an encode pass.

For multi-check transactions, the 2-pass solution that has been available in DocuTran for the past year is used to further reduce the number of items that must be banked.
